Reflections from Rev. Ann Kansfield, Pastor of UCC Greenpoint Reformed Church, Brooklyn, NYC
My colleague Rev. Micah Bucey wrote about our deep love and affection for Berlin’s CSD celebration. His congregation, Judson Memorial, is in the heart of Greenwich Village, not far from Christopher Street. Judson, like the neighborhood that surrounds it, has a history of being on the vanguard of many social justice movements.
The congregation we serve is further away in Brooklyn, in a neighborhood called Greenpoint. It’s a neighborhood with working class roots - certainly not the first place one would imagine finding a church with married lesbian co-pastors. The impact of the Stonewall riot has ripped out far and wide - to places like Berlin and even to neighborhoods like Greenpoint.
So while Micah’s church represents the beginning of the riot, our congregation is one of the beneficiaries of the movement of justice and liberation. And so we delight in joining you for this year’s CSD celebration so that we might continue to share the message of God’s grace, love and joy with a world that desperately needs more light and glitter and fabulousness.
